how would you describe your work today? Most of my work is residential design and renovations, though I designed a wine bar and a couple of law offices. I work out of Charleston with many local clients, but we also have clients around the country, including Florida, Austin and New York. My work is original and people often say they can recognize a home that I designed, yet every house feels completely different. I like for my clients' homes to feel lived-in and inviting. let's talk about the home you remodeled on sullivan's island. We started in 2015 but didn't complete the house until this year. The homeowners' kids were in college. They're both engineers who started a business a long time ago and sold it and decided they wanted to live on the water. They were in their house for a couple of years before they called me. It's the only time a client has ever found me through a Google search. Within five minutes, we hit it off and we still get together for coffee. At first they just wanted to change the living room. But as soon as I saw the house, I realized the kitchen design was not very thoughtful. When we had our first meeting, I brought in a tile and said, "If nothing else, we need to change the backsplash, because the kitchen is open to the living room." They called a couple of days later and said, "We think we should gut the kitchen," and I said, "Great, I've already designed it in my head." why did you choose to make a crisscross pattern with the made modern split in the kitchen? I was looking at the tiles and there was just something about the pattern, how it made your eye move up and down the wall, which was important because we were tiling such a large area. Why did you choose that tile in the first place? I first used the tile-but in a square versus a rectangle - in the Coastal Living idea home. To this day, it's still one of my favorite tiles. MADE Modern Split is a really beautiful glazed, handmade tile, and it's not too traditional and not too modern, I love the color palette it comes in. It has a really beautiful quality that I just gravitate toward.
